After long battle, Uber becomes first taxi app to get approved in New York City
By Adrianne Jeffries, theverge.comLooks like New York City isn’t going to hold a grudge against Uber for attempting to launch its taxi-hailing service without permission last summer.
Welcome to NYC, Über, but somebody tell me the point! It’s not hard to get a cab, and this service’s features don’t make it worth the markup.

This flatbed carrying the components for the Clinton St. & Aiken Pl station of the new Citi Bike program rolled into Brooklyn Heights this morning. Demand for the program looks high—more than 5,000 riders have already joined, and the bikes aren’t even in place yet!
Me, I’m going to wait until there are actually bikes on the street before I sign up. No one was more excited to see bike-sharing come to NYC than me when it was announced. And when they said it was coming last spring, I had my checkbook out and I was ready to ride. Then they kept pushing the launch date up by vague increments. “June” was changed to “late June.” Then “July,” then “late July.” This kept up all through the summer until finally “June” had turned into “March 2013.” And they didn’t even make that!
The Citi Bikes launch was badly bungled, and the people running the program seem determined not to communicate with the public. They say they’ll be up and running in May. I hope it’s true, but I won’t believe anything they say until I see it.

According to the semi-reputable Daily Mail, an unlikely scam recently unfolded in Argentina, where a pair of fluffy poodles for sale turned out to be ferrets on steriods, with a blow-out!:
One retired man from Catamarca, duped by the knock-down price for a pedigree dog, became suspicious he had bought what Argentinians call a ‘Brazilian rat’ and when he returned home took the ‘dogs’ to a vet for their vaccinations.
Imagine his surprise when his suspicious were confirmed - he had in fact purchased two ferrets that had been given steroids at birth to increase their size and then had some extra grooming to make their coats resemble a fluffy toy poodle.
The Daily Mail says this really happened, but I’ve got to wonder—this sounds a lot like an ugly old urban legend.

According to Wired, this thing is about as big as your face!
Covered in beautiful, ornate markings, the spiders belong to the genus Poecilotheria, known as “Pokies” for short. These are the tiger spiders, an arboreal group indigenous to India and Sri Lanka that are known for being colorful, fast, and venomous. As a group, the spiders are related to a class of South American tarantula that includes the Goliath bird-eater, the world’s largest.
